![]() ![]() ![]() Steven's eyes burned, and he had to swallow the hard ache that rose in his throat. John, were gone for good? That they wouldn't be coming to pick him up, no matter how hard he hoped or how many stars he wished on, that night or any other. How could he be expected to comprehend that his folks, Zack and Jillie St. Matt was small, with his dad's dark hair and his mother's violet eyes, and he was exceptionally intelligent-maybe even gifted-but he was still only five years old. It wasn't hard to guess who he was waiting for. Something tightened in Steven's throat at the poignancy of the sight. A bundle-probably his favorite toy, a plush skunk named Fred, rolled up in his blanket-rested beside him, and the boy's tiny frame was rimmed in an aura of silvery-gold moonlight. ![]() The door stood open to the fresh high-country air, which was crisply cool on this early June night, but not cold, and the little boy-Steven's newly adopted son- sat on the cement step outside. ![]() One by one, the mental tumblers clicked into place: Some instinct-or maybe just a stir of a breeze-awakened Steven Creed he sat up in bed, took a fraction of a moment to orient himself to unfamiliar surroundings. ![]() ![]() Growing up, she was a voracious reader, and books took her to places where her imagination could thrive. The reader will leave with feelings that hope can overcome grief.Ībout the author: Lisa Stringfellow writes middle grade fiction and has a not-so-secret fondness for fantasy with a dark twist. The magical elements were integrated so naturally into the Caribbean world Lisa built they were wonderfully believable. Stringfellow weaves a story of historical folklore with contemporary situations and authentic characters. And a wish that big will exact an even bigger price. ![]() Despite her hatred for all humans, her magic requires that she make a bargain: the comb in exchange for a wish, but what Kela wants most is for her mother to be alive. But far away deep in the cold ocean, the mermaid Ophidia can feel that her magical comb has been taken. When Kela and her friend Lissy stumble across an ancient-looking comb in a coral cave, Kela brings it home as her very own treasure. ![]() Set in the Caribbean and rich with culture and folklore, the book is a journey of recovery and resilience. ![]() A Comb of Wishes is one of the most creative and captivatin g books I’ve read in a while. Stringfellow is a masterful storyteller who writes prose like a seasoned pro. Congratulations to Lisa Stringfellow on her middle grade debut, A Comb of Wishes. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() It’s much better to people like Old Man Warner that one person be chosen at random (so the process is ‘fair’) and sacrificed for the collective health of the community. People will die if the lottery is not drawn, because the crops will fail and people will starve as a result. ![]() To give up the lottery would, in the words of Old Man Warner, be the behaviour of ‘crazy fools’, because he is convinced that the lottery is not only beneficial but essential to the success of the village’s crops. We may scoff at the Carthaginians sacrificing their children to the gods or the Aztecs doing similar, but Jackson’s point is that every age and every culture has its own illogical and even harmful traditions, which are obeyed in the name of ‘tradition’ and in the superstitious belief that they have a beneficial effect. ![]() ![]() But, perhaps this is because I have read the rest of his crime novels before this one. I was struck by the formulaic relationships and the casual description of his obsession with the past in this novel. It is perhaps not as good as others I’ve read. This book is about the murder of a young Thai boy and explores the issues of racism and immigration in Iceland. Despite all this Erlandur is a rather endearing point of view character. He feels guilty for his indifference to them, but also powerless to do much about it. He is also upset by his relationship with his drug addict daughter and estranged son. Erlandur is obsessed by and guilty for losing hold of his younger brother in a blizzard when he was a child. I think I’ve read all of these Icelandic crime novels featuring the depressive, gloomy and anti-social Inspector Erlandur and his underlings Sigidur Oli and Elinborg. ![]() 2008.Īn excellent website for Indridason is Crime fiction lovers. Breadtag Sagas ©: Author Tony, April 2015Īrnaldur Indridason Arctic Chill (2005), Eng transl. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This is just a really, really funny film. ![]() Some beautiful bits of background business too - the hippie in the background of the 2001 scene, just ignoring the portentous foreground action while eating his frozen custard is worth a look. Set-pieces - like the 2001 parody, the bar scene where the monster 'Schlock' observes a Jose Feliciano-like blind musician playing a piano boogie and ends up joining in, and a very funny scene where the allegedly fearful Schlock goes into a cinema to see a horror movie, and is terrified - all come off perfectly. What sets this one apart is its sustained comic atmosphere, which is goofy, laconic and giddy. (Others like this were sketch comedy flicks like Landis's "Kentucky Fried Movie" plus the Mel Brooks and Woody Allen movies of around the same time). "Schlock" falls in neatly with other 'progressive' US comedy movies of the early 70s, which kicked around genre conventions and added a new frankness in language and toilet humour to US film comedy vocabulary. Landis provides his own fascinating and entertaining insights into the world of moviemaking, while conducting in-depth 'conversations' with leading monster makers, including David Cronenberg, Christopher Lee, John Carpenter, and Sam Raimi to discuss some of the most petrifying monsters ever seen. John Landis's first movie may be as good as anything he made. ![]() ![]() ![]() Two strong females are at the center of the cast of characters as councilors, generals, protectors, and leaders in the fate of A’landi. Paramount is currently meeting with writers and directors as Akiva Goldsman will produce. Jordan will star as John Clark in a film series at Paramount, where at least two films are planned based on the books Rainbow Six and Without Remorse. On the heels of Amazon’s Jack Ryan, another Tom Clancy character is getting adapted, this time for the big screen. ![]() ![]() The language really sets the scene and pushes the concept nicely for the reader, and the action, although limited, gives everything a sense of New York that's pretty much required for this to work at all. Births are messy and traumatic and sometimes don't go as planned, and the birth of a city wouldn't be an exception. The good: A confusing story that describes a confusing event. In the case of this story, it's used to set up the situation and the personality of the characters, and it works. ![]() I try not to be a prude, but language is important to me and a lot of use of the f-word can turn me off, even if it's proper in context and used realistically. ![]() Jemisin is about how a city grows up and comes into its own. ![]() ![]() ![]() The Complete Jack the Ripper, fully revised and updated.Allen, 1975 (reprinted as Jack the Ripper: The Complete Casebook).
